Subject: Shanghai ShenDa University Subject: Re: Shanghai ShenDa University Welcome to our Univeristy. After you are sure about the everything, we are ready to sign a contract with you on 5th. Our salary is 4000-8000rmb. On June 26, 1992, a group of professors from Shanghai Jiaotong, Peking and Tsinghua Universities, three of the leading universities in China, initiated the notion of establishing a university with funding from the private sector. It received affirmative response from the government and the public. Sanda University was thus founded on August 11, 1992. It was recognized and approved by the then National Education Commission of China, which has since re-adopted its original name of the Ministry of Education, in February 1994. It was the first full-time private university offering programs leading to accredited certificates and diplomas in the country, and on March 6th, 2002, with the official ratification of the Chinese Ministry of Education, it became, under the supervision of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the first full-time private comprehensive university providing undergraduate courses in China. In pursuance to an ordinance promulgated by the Ministry of Education in 2002, Sanda University changed its name to Shanghai Sanda Insititute. Sanda's present total enrolment is 9,727. Principles and Purposes The principle of Sanda University is to faithfully follow the guidelines set up by the state for developing the country through enhancing education, science and technology, and to persist in its non-profit orientation. Sanda sticks to the fine traditions of the Chinese nation and, at the same time, seeks to introduce advanced foreign concepts and practices important in the development of higher education. It attaches great importance to quality education and is open to suggestions and criticisms from its faculty, staff and students, so as to ensure that initiatives from all sectors receive due consideration. The students of Sanda are encouraged to become professionals with a sound moral grounding and to carry forward fine Chinese traditions with a sense of global responsibility, to be accountable to both themselves and society, and to meet the needs of enhancing social civilization and developing the economy. Sanda University, in its practice of the past twelve years, has upheld its maxim of "Treating the society with sincerity and honesty, convincing the society with rigorous administration and repaying the society by turning out qualified graduates," and thus established and consolidated its good reputation. Sanda insists on recruiting both full-time and part-time teachers who have worthy educational backgrounds and appropriate expertise and is determined to place quality education at the top of its agenda. It is Sanda's ambition to gain recognition as a private university of influence in and outside the country in the years to come. 1. Faculty and facilities Sanda University has two campuses. The main campus is located in the fast-developing Pudong New District of Shanghai with an area of 26.8 hectares and building space of approximately 2.5 million square feet. It currently has 444 full-time faculty members, of whom, 50.8% are professors and associate professors. Most of Sanda's part-time teachers are from the key universities in Shanghai and have been working at Sanda for more than five years. All of them are experienced in undergraduate education. Additionally, there are some teachers recruited from other countries, such as the United States, Great Britain, Canada and Japan, teaching both English and Japanese. Sanda's library possesses a collection of 621,000 books and over 100GBs of electronic material. It has become one of the 31 members of the University and College Internet Library Networks in Shanghai. The University has established a number of centers for various experimental purposes, including an internet center, a computer center, a center for education with electrical aids, a language laboratory, an electronic reading-room and multi-media classrooms. In addition, there are ten other specialized experimental laboratories: Electronic & Digital Logic, Communication Principles, Signal & System, Computer Composition, Computer Networks, Micro-computer Interfaces & Single Chip Micro-controllers, Electronic Accounting, E-Commerce, Art & Design and TV Photography. There are over 2,000 computers for the students to use on campus. 2. Distinguishing Features Sanda University has always committed itself to quality education and emphasized the importance of enabling its students to have a solid command of English and be good at computer skills. Its distinguishing features in delivering higher education can be summarized in the following terms: a. Proficiency in foreign languages, computer skills and a good command of higher mathematics has always been emphasized at Sanda in the design of its curricula. Students are required to display ability in aural comprehension and verbal expression in foreign language as well as computer skills. They must excel in a society where globalization and information explosion are pervasive factors. With regard to English level, approximately 80% of Sanda students have passed the Fourth Grade of the College English Test (CET-4), which is administered in China every year and about 30% of them have passed CET-6, which is the equivalent to Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) 560-570. Sanda's 14 third-year English major students from its junior college (three-year programs) took part in the TEM-8 (Test of English for English Major) examination in 2001. Twelve of them passed. In 2002, 24 students participated in this examination, with 23 passing. For 2003, the success rate was 26 out of 31. In 2000, nation-wide CET-4 & 6 Oral Examinations were held, with 1,906 candidates from all universities (with four-year and longer programs) and some colleges (with three-year programs) and 11 out of the 12 entrants from Sanda passed. Among the 209 candidates who scored Grade A, 4 were from Sanda. In the first half of 2001, the number of Sanda students eligible to take part in the oral exams grew to 86, and, in the latter half of that year, this number increased further to 161. The English level of Sanda graduates who are not English majors has been ranked top among China's universities and colleges. As for the level of computer skills of non-computer majors, all junior college graduates of Sanda, who are required to take the test for Non-Computer Majors Grade I, have passed, with some even scoring Grade II. In the past two years, 20% of Sanda's graduates from its junior college were transferred to degree programs and were much commended by their hosting universities. Those pursuing further learning in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Japan have their credits from Sanda recognized by the universities they enter. Most of the Sanda students moving abroad have earned undergraduate degrees after studying for one year with many going on to study for a second degree. In 2002, 74 out of Sanda's 900 junior college graduates pursued degree studies abroad. Many of them have made commendable progress thanks to the academic preparedness Sanda has endowed them with. b. Intellectual and Moral Preparation Sanda provides intellectual and moral preparation for its students, the Purpose of which is for them to acquire a correct world outlook and a true understanding of the essence of knowledge. The quality of its graduates is widely recognized by society. According to a survey conducted to monitor college graduates in China, 95% of employers confirmed that those from Sanda worked earnestly, with initiative and a sense of responsibility, and were dedicated. They were appreciated for their readiness in adapting themselves to new challenges in their work and were generally regarded as friendly and helpful. Based on the appraisal of quality relative to five indices, over 95% of Sanda graduates were rated Excellent or Good and 64% of them have become backbones of their companies. This good performance has helped Sanda enlarge its enrolment and led to it being the only private university in Shanghai entitled to admit students achieving the above qualification margin in the national examinations for entering universities. The university enrols students not only from Shanghai but also from other provinces such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, etc. Among the over 5,000 Sanda junior college graduates since its establishment, nearly half have joined foreign and joint venture businesses excluding those who have transferred to undergraduate studies or pursued further learning overseas. In the three years from1999 to 2001, 18 graduates of Sanda were employed directly by foreign firms. Sanda's students have enjoyed excellent placement opportunities with over 97% of them finding jobs compatible with their expertise in the past few years. c. Sanda University gives priority to disciplines and lays emphasis on moral and behavioral education. It stresses regulations but never overlooks the role of moral persuasion in striving to produce law-abiding citizens. This "conservative" moral criterion has been much welcomed by the parents of students.
