Part Nine:  Times Past

Was/were (positive, negative and questions).  Past simple irregular verbs

-          At school last Monday

Questions

-          Where were you last year?

-          Was he at home? Yes, he was or no, she wasn’t

 

We use was/were with born, not am/is/are.

-          Where were you born?

-          She was born in Morocco.

Exercise 1:

Was/were (positive, negative and questions).

-          Where ……… your sister born?

-          When ……….  Your parents born?

-          ……….. she at school yesterday? No, she ……………….. .

-          ………….. you at work last Monday? No, we ……………  .

-          Diana Spencer ……. Born in England.

-          They ……. Born in 1988.

 

Example 2: Past simple irregular verbs.

Many common verbs are irregular for example:

Do  ΰ did

Findΰ found

Am/is/are ΰ was/were

Goΰwent

Comeΰcame

Haveΰhad

Make ΰmade

See ΰsaw

Say ΰ said

 

Exercise 2: Past simple irregular verbs:

-   Yesterday I met my sister at one o’clock and we ……………. (have) lunch in a Chinese restaurants. 

 

-   I …………. (do) a lot of housework.

-   Yesterday I …………. (go) for a walk near a beach.

Part Ten

Past simple positive, negative and question

Example1:  past simple positive

Present ΰ past (regular verbs add –ed or –d in the past simple)

Play ΰ played

Watch ΰ watched

Turn ΰ turned

Listen ΰ listened

Present ΰ past (many common verbs are irregular)

Go ΰ went

See ΰsaw

Have ΰ had

Exercise 1: past simple positive

Now it’s your turn

Fill in the blank:

-          Yesterday I …… (go) to work late.

-          Last weekend  we …… (see) Anny with her husband.

-          Last summer they …… (have) great times in Thailand.

-          I …… (listen) your CD last night.

 

Example 2:  past simple negative and question

In the present Do/does but in the past Did because it’s irregular verb.

In the negative: did not or didn’t
